Macheta de supraviețuire modificată se bazează pe un design din anii '50-'60 al unui model folosit de o unitate a forțelor speciale, ajustată pentru a o face mai potrivită ca macetă de supraviețuire versatilă.
Inima modelului compact MSM este o lamă plină din oțel carbon 1065, acoperit cu pulbere.
Diferitele zone ale lamei îi permit să facă față unui număr mare de sarcini diferite.
Greutatea sa este concentrată spre vârf, pentru a-l face deosebit de eficient pentru tăiere și tocare, secundar este utilă pentru o gamă largă de alte activități, cum ar fi săpatul și căutarea.
Pentru lucrările care implică materiale fibroase există pe spatele lamei dinți ascuțiți.

Inspired to create a chair where the back and arms are moulded from a single piece of plywood, Hecht and Colin describe employing a process similar to that a tailor might use to cut a pattern in fabric. This approach resulted in the beautiful structure wherein the moulded back and arms component is supported by a simple A-frame wood dowel construction. One of the benefits of this design is an increase in comfort due to natural movement in the plywood back.
